In reading and writing, students are working on animal research. They have opportunities to read books about their animal as well as learn about other animals. We have learned about animal classifications, skin coverings, adaptations, and size! Students will keep learning and researching about their animal as we learn as a class. When we are finished, they will have a whole project on the animal of their choice!

In science, students are working on exploring solids and liquids. So far students have determined what classifies an object as a solid, if the solids roll or stack, and if the solids sink or float. We will keep exploring the solids and soon learn more about liquids.

The month of October is Spanish Heritage Month. To celebrate, we learned some Spanish and read a Spanish version of Cinderella. Butterfly Updates
October 16, 2017
Today our caterpillar came out of its chrysalis! We watched the process of the chrysalis being formed, but missed the butterfly coming out of the chrysalis. We watched videos to see what the process looked like, and talked about the importance of drying it's wings before flying.
This is a swallowtail butterfly if you want to look up more information at home! |
Pumpkins and Apples
October 12, 2017
We have been reading stories about pumpkins and apples. This week, students worked with a venn diagram to compare and contrast apples and pumpkins. They were excited to look on the inside of them to see how they were the same and different in more ways.

How are pumpkins and apples the same and different? Pumpkins are orange, heavy and bumpy. Pumpkins have long thick stems. Apples can be red, yellow or green. Apples are shiny, and have a short thin stem. Both apples and pumpkins have seeds on the inside. They can both be used for food. Apples and pumpkins are the same and different.

Math Problem Solvers!
October 10, 2017
Today in math, students were given "peas" and "carrots" and had to work with a partner to find out how many different combinations they could have, if they had seven vegetables all together and some had to be peas, and some had to be carrots. They worked together well and came up with multiple combinations. Amazing thinking!

Hello caterpillars!
October 2, 2017
Over the weekend, one of my neighbors found caterpillars at their house! They thought of our classroom, and let me take two swallowtail caterpillars. Here are some pictures of Swallowtail caterpillars and butterflies! If anyone has an fennel plant, this is what they love to eat, and they are quickly eating all the fennel I have in their cage. Please bring some in if you have a fennel plant at home to help us feed them and help them turn into beautiful butterflies.
**UPDATE: One of our caterpillars is in his chrysalis!**
